DC JOHN BERGERON
Deputy Chief John Bergeron is the Operations Chief for Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department. He is a lifelong resident of Roscoe, graduating from Hononegah High School. He joined the department as a cadet in 1981 and became a Firefighter in July 1983. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1992 and to Captain February 4, 2006. On February 21, 2009 he was promoted to Deputy Chief. In July 2010 he became a paid full-time member with the department. John became an EMT in 1984 and a Paramedic in 1988.
John is State Certified as an Advanced Technician Firefighter, Hazard Materials Operations, Instructor II, Fire Officer II, Vehicle and Machinery Operations and Trench Operations. He has taken classes at Rock Valley College in pursuit of his Associates Degree. John currently sits on the Region 1 EMS Advisory Committee, Swedish American Hospital EMS Advisory Committee and Swedish American Hospital Chest Pain Center Committee. Member of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association and past President of Winnebago Fire Chiefs Association.
He received the Roscoe VFW Firefighter of the Year Award in 1991 & 2008. John received the NIEMS Paramedic of the Year in 1997. He also received the 2009 HRFD Firefighter Choice Good Service Award.
John and his wife Deann have been married for 26 years and have two children, Ashlee and Dalton.
BC TOM AAKER
Battalion Chief Tom Aaker joined the department January 1996. Tom was promoted to Lieutenant on Feb. 21, 2004 and then seven years later to Captain on Feb. 11, 2011. On Feb. 8, 2013 Tom was promoted to Battalion Chief. He has been certified as an EMT-B since 1997.
Tom is the Training Officer for the department and also fills the role as Equipment Officer.
Tom Is State Certified Fire Officer 1 & 11, Advanced Technician Firefighter, Operations level in HazMat, Trench, Rope, as well as Vehicle & Machinery. Tom has been involved and taken many classes in Firefighting, EMS, and Technical Rescue throughout his career.
Tom received the "Rookie of the Year Award" in 1996 and he was awarded the 2006 "HRFD Firefighter Choice Good Service Award".
Tom's grandfather was the first Fire Chief for Otto Township Fire Department as well as one of the founding members.
Tom and his wife Amber have two children, Piper and Tommy Jr.
BC JAY ALMS
Battalion Chief Jay Alms joined the department in 1991. He was promoted to Lieutenant in January of 1999 and to Captain on June 6, 2008. On Feb. 8, 2013 Jay was promoted to Battalion Chief.
Jay is the EMS Coordinator for the department.
Jay is State Certified Fire Officer I, Firefighter II & III, and Hazardous Materials Operations and is NIMS compliant. He is State Certified Instructor I and instructs both fire and EMS. Jay became an EMT in 1991 and a Paramedic in 1994.
Jay is an EMS preceptor with Swedish-American Emergency Medical Services and Contract Coordinator with Kurtz Paramedic Services. Jay is an Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver and a member of the Winnebago County Dive Team.
He received the "Loves Park VFW Firefighter of the Year Award" in April 1997. Jay was awarded "Northern IL EMS Paramedic of the Year" for 2000. On Feb. 8, 2013 Jay was awarded the 2012 "HRFD Firefighter Choice Good Service Award".
Jay served as Treasurer and Secretary of the Harlem-Roscoe Firefighter's Association for eight years. He also currently sits as a Commissioner on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the Village of Machesney Park. Jay currently serves as President of the Winnebago Fire Chiefs Association.
Jay and his wife Deb have three children that all serve in the fire service. Northwest Fire DC Ryan (Charlotte) Alms, HRFD Dispatcher Megan Alms, and HRFD Firefighter Kyle Alms. They also have four grandchildren, Lily, Mason, Lucy, and Chloe.
CAPT. TIM BERGERON
Capt. Tim Bergeron joined the department in 1991. He was promoted to Lieutenant on April 18, 2005. Tim was promoted to Captain on February 9, 2008. Tim is currently the Captain of Station #3 on Willowbrook Rd.
Tim became an EMT-B in 1993. He became an EMT-Paramedic in 1997. In 2007 he retired his paramedic license and is currently an EMT-B.
He is State Certified Fire Officer 1, FF II & III, Fire Service Instructor I, Haz-Mat Materials Operations, Trench Operations, and Fire Apparatus Engineer. Tim has been involved and taken many classes in Firefighting, EMS and Leadership throughout his career.
Tim received the department's 2007 Good Service Award and the Most Valuable Member at Station #3 in 2016. Tim served the Harlem-Roscoe Firefighters Association as Vice President for 2 years and as Secretary for 2 terms. He works as a machinist at Woodward Inc. since Jan 1996
CAPT. JOHN DONOVAN
Capt. John Donovan joined the department on December 15, 2001. He was promoted to Lieutenant on February 5, 2016, and then was promoted to Captain of Station #1 on February 4, 2017. John became an EMT-B in 2007 and an EMT-Paramedic in 2011 which he currently holds a State License.
John is Illinois State Certified as a Fire Officer 1, FFII & FF III, HazMat Operations, Fire Service Vehicle Operator, Instructor I, and is NIMS Compliant. He has completed several fire related classes through IFSI such as Basic Aerial Ops, Basic Company Officer, and Commercial Building Ops along with other classes. John is a certified CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor through the American Heart Association and teaches community classes for the fire department.
John is currently employed as the Manager of Electronic Health Records with Physicians Immediate Care since September 2000. John and his wife Carol have four children, Corie (Kenny) Boris, Chelsea, Michael, and McKenna.
CAPT. MIKE HUFFMAN
Capt. Mike Huffman joined the department in the fall of 2000. He previously served nine years on North Park Fire. He was promoted to Lieutenant on June 8, 2010, and to Acting Captain on Oct. 20, 2014 and Full Captain on February 13, 2015. Mike became an EMT in 1993.
Mike is IL State Certified Fire Officer I, FFII and FFIII with Hazardous Materials Operations, Instructor I & II, Trench Ops, Technical Rescue Awareness, Ropes Operations, Hazardous Materials Incident Command, Haz-Mat Ops, Emergency Roadway Extrication Technician, Vehicle Machinery Ops and is a Senior Fire Apparatus Operator. Mike has taken numerous classes in: Vehicle Extrication, Big Rig Rescue, New Vehicle Technology, NFPA - Electrical Vehicle Safety for Emergency Responders, Rapid Intervention Team Training , Fire Ground Tactics, Commercial Building Operations, Rescue Company Operations, Truck Company Operations, Smoke Divers and is NIMS compliant.
Mike is currently the HRFD Extrication Team leader and TERC (Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee) International Judge. Mike is also a lead Instructor for the Monroe Fire School in vehicle extrication, also is an adjunct field instructor for NAVRA – (North American Vehicle Rescue Association. Mike also is a adjunct Instructor and teaches at FDIC – (Fire department Instructors Conference). Mike travels throughout the USA teaching Vehicle Extrication to firefighters in need. Mike is the one who spearheaded the annual Harlem-Roscoe Crunch Time Extrication & Learning Symposium.
While serving on North Park Fire, Mike received a "Certificate of Honor from the Office of Illinois State Fire Marshal" for his heroism in helping save a young girl from her burning home. Mike is a 4-time Hurst Green Cross participant.
LT. JOSH HOFFLAND
Lt. Josh Hoffland joined the department in March of 2009. He was promoted to Lieutenant on February 13, 2015. Josh was an EMT-B when he joined the department, and became a Paramedic in August of 2011.
Josh holds an Associate Degree of Science from Rock Valley College. Josh is state certified Advanced Technician FF, HazMat Ops, Trench Ops, Vehicle Machinery Ops, Rope Ops, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Fire Service Vehicle Operator, Instructor I, and has taken numerous fire officer courses towards his FO I. He has attended classes and trainings on Tactical Emergency Medical Service (TEMS) and Rescue Task Force (RTF). Josh is the Co-chair of the HRFD RTF initiative. He is NIMS compliant.
Josh is also a member of the HRFD safety committee. Josh is employed as a paramedic/firefighter with Kurtz Paramedic Services.L
LT. RYAN SARVER
Lt Ryan Sarver grew up in the Village of Roscoe, graduating from Harlem High School, after college Ryan joined the department in April 2011.
He was promoted to Lieutenant in March 2017, and then was promoted to EMS Coordinator in June 2017. Ryan became an EMT-B in 2009 and a Paramedic in 2014.
Ryan is Illinois State Certified as a Basic Operations Firefighter, HazMat Technician and IC, Instructor I, and Fire Apparatus Engineer. He has completed several fire related classes through IEMA to be trained in Emergency Management. Ryan is a certified CPR/ACLS/PALS Instructor through the American Heart Association and teaches/coordinates community classes for the fire department.
Ryan is currently employed full-time at Harlem-Roscoe Fire along with a part time job with Swedish American EMS. Ryan and his wife, Brianna, have been married since 2012 and have two children named Callie and Liam.
LT. PATRICK TROLLOP
Lt. Patrick Trollop joined the department in 2012. He was promoted to Lieutenant on February 13th, 2015. Patrick was an EMT-B when he joined the department and became a Paramedic in March of 2013.
Patrick served in the United States Marine Corps from 1998-2002. During that time he gained the rank of a Corporal and was an Infantry Squad Leader.
Patrick is state certified in Basic Firefighter, Instructor 1, Vehicle Machinery Operations, Hazmat Operations, Hazmat Incident Command, Water Operations, Watercraft Technician, Swiftwater Technician, Rope Operations, and an Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings Instructor. Patrick is NIMS compliant, which includes six incident command classes, ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800. Patrick is also currently finishing his Associates in Fire Science through Rock Valley College while also working towards his Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration through Western Illinois University.
Patrick also heads the Water Rescue Division with Lieutenant Justin Mayton. He is employed as a paramedic/firefighter with Kurtz Paramedic Services. Patrick has two children, Gabriella and William
