DC JOHN BERGERON
Deputy Chief John Bergeron is the Operations Chief for Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department. He is a lifelong resident of Roscoe, graduating from Hononegah High School. He joined the department as a cadet in 1981 and became a Firefighter in July 1983. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1992 and to Captain February 4, 2006. On February 21, 2009 he was promoted to Deputy Chief. In July 2010 he became a paid full-time member with the department. John became an EMT in 1984 and a Paramedic in 1988.
John is State Certified as an Advanced Technician Firefighter, Hazard Materials Operations, Instructor II, Fire Officer II, Vehicle and Machinery Operations and Trench Operations. He has taken classes at Rock Valley College in pursuit of his Associates Degree. John currently sits on the Region 1 EMS Advisory Committee, Swedish American Hospital EMS Advisory Committee and Swedish American Hospital Chest Pain Center Committe. He is Vice President of MABAS Division 8, Member of the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association and past President of Winnebago Fire Chiefs Association.
He received the Roscoe VFW Firefighter of the Year Award in 1991 & 2008. John received the NIEMS Paramedic of the Year in 1997. He also received the 2009 HRFD Firefighter Choice Good Service Award.
John and his wife Deann have two children, Ashlee and Dalton. and one granddaughter Jazzalyn.
Division Chief TOM AAKER
Division Chief Tom Aaker joined the department in February 1996. Tom was promoted to Lieutenant on Feb. 21, 2004 and then seven years later to Captain on Feb. 11, 2011. On Feb. 8, 2013 Tom was promoted to Battalion Chief. Tom was named Division Chief July 2020. He has been certified as an EMT-B since 1997. Tom is the Division Chief in charge of Training for the department. He also assists with SCBA’s, and Equipment as needed.
Tom Is State Certified Fire Officer II, Advanced Technician Firefighter, Operations level in HazMat, Trench, Rope, as well as Vehicle & Machinery. He brings many technical skills to the position including; Incident Command, EMS, Special Operations, Dispatch, Telecommunications, Technical Rescue, Fire Suppression, HazMat, Health & Safety, Strategic Planning, Fire Training Academy, and Officer Training.
Tom received the "Rookie of the Year Award" in 1996 and he was awarded the 2006 "HRFD Firefighter Choice Good Service Award". Tom's grandfather was the first Fire Chief for Otto Township Fire Department as well as one of the founding members. Tom and his wife Amber have two children, Piper and Tommy Jr.
Division Chief JAY ALMS
Division Chief Jay Alms joined the department in 1991. He was promoted to Lieutenant in January of 1999 and to Captain on June 6, 2008. On Feb. 8, 2013 Jay was promoted to Battalion Chief. Jay was named Division Chief July 2020.
Jay is the full-time Fire Prevention Bureau Chief. Jay is a certified Fire & Arson Investigator and Fire Inspector. Jay is State Certified Fire Officer II, Firefighter III, and Hazardous Materials Operations and is NIMS compliant. He is State Certified Instructor II and instructs both fire and EMS. Jay became an EMT in 1991 and a Paramedic in 1994.
Jay received the "Loves Park VFW Firefighter of the Year Award" in April 1997. Jay was awarded "Northern IL EMS Paramedic of the Year" for 2000. On Feb. 8, 2013 Jay was awarded the 2012 "HRFD Firefighter Choice Good Service Award". Jay currently serves as Treasurer and past Secretary of the Harlem-Roscoe Firefighter's Association. He also currently sits as a Commissioner on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the Village of Machesney Park. Jay is past President of the Winnebago Fire Chiefs Association.
Jay and his wife Deb have three children that have all served in the fire service: DC Ryan (Charlotte) Alms, Firefighter/EMT/EMD Megan (Jason) Street, and Firefighter Kyle(Abbey Green) Alms. They also have six grandchildren, Lily, Mason, Lucy, Chloe, Kasen and Marley.
BC KEVIN BRIGGS
Battalion Chief Kevin Briggs was sworn in as a full-time HRFD Battalion Chief on July 27, 2020.
He joined North Park Fire Department in 2009 and has proudly served there for 11 years. He worked his way up from a firefighter to a Deputy Chief of Operations. Kevin joined The Chicago Rockford International Airport in 2013 as an ARFF firefighter. In 2014 Kevin was promoted to Deputy Chief of Training.
Kevin is Illinois State Certified as a Fire Officer 2, FF III/Advanced FF, Hazmat Operations, Fire Service Vehicle Operator, Instructor II, and NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800. Kevin is certified as an EMT basic since 2009. Kevin has been involved in taking many classes in firefighting EMS and leadership throughout his career. Kevin is a 3rd generation firefighter.
Kevin and his wife Jessica have been married since 2010 and have three children, Kyle, McKinley, and Spencer Briggs.
BC JOHN DONOVAN
Battalion Chief John Donovan joined the department on December 15, 2001. He was promoted to Lieutenant on February 5, 2016, and then was promoted to Captain on February, 2017. He was sworn in as a full-time Battalion Chief on July 27, 2020.
John became an EMT-B in 2007 and an EMT-Paramedic in 2011 which he currently holds a State License. John is Illinois State Certified as a Fire Officer 1, FFII & FF III, HazMat Operations, Fire Service Vehicle Operator, Instructor I, and is NIMS Compliant.
He has completed several fire related classes through IFSI such as Basic Aerial Ops, Basic Company Officer, and Commercial Building Ops along with other classes. John is a certified CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor through the American Heart Association and teaches community classes for the fire department. John is currently employed as the Manager of Electronic Health Records with Physicians Immediate Care since September 2000.
John and his wife Carol have four children, Corie (Kenny) Boris, Chelsea (Matt) Alejandre, Michael, and McKenna. They also have 2 grandchildren Wesley and Rylie.
BC PATRICK TROLLOP
Patrick joined the department in 2012. He was promoted to Lieutenant on Feb. 13, 2015 and to Captain on Sept. 23, 2019. He was sworn in as a full-time Battalion Chief on July 27, 2020.
He was an EMT-B when joining the department and became a Paramedic in 2013. Patrick currently oversees the Special Operations Division and is the Disaster Preparedness Coordinator for the department. Patrick received the HRFD Firefighter of the Year award in both 2017 as well as in 2019.
Patrick served in the United States Marine Corps from 1998-2002, during that time he gained the rank of Corporal and was an Infantry Squad Leader. During his time in the Marines he served in the Far East as well as the Middle East.
Since joining Harlem-Roscoe Fire, Patrick has obtained multiple state certifications from the Office of the State Fire Marshal including Advanced Technician Firefighter, Fire Officer II, Vehicle Machinery Operations, Hazmat Operations, Hazmat Incident Command, Water Operations, Watercraft Technician, Swiftwater Technician, and Fire Apparatus Engineer. Patrick also has his Associates in Fire Science through Rock Valley College and is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree through Southern Illinois University. Patrick has obtained the Illinois Professional Emergency Management certification from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. He is also a graduate of the Managing Officer Program through the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. Patrick and his wife Becky were married in 2019 and have two children Gabriella and William
CAPT. TIM BERGERON
Capt. Tim Bergeron joined the department in 1991. He was promoted to Lieutenant on April 18, 2005. Tim was promoted to Captain on February 9, 2008. Tim is currently the Captain of Station #3 on Willowbrook Rd.
Tim became an EMT-B in 1993. He became an EMT-Paramedic in 1997. In 2007 he retired his paramedic license and is currently an EMT-B.
He is State Certified Fire Officer 1, FF II & III, Fire Service Instructor I, Haz-Mat Materials Operations, Trench Operations, and Fire Apparatus Engineer. Tim has been involved and taken many classes in Firefighting, EMS and Leadership throughout his career.
Tim received the department's 2007 Good Service Award and the Most Valuable Member at Station #3 in 2016. Tim served the Harlem-Roscoe Firefighters Association as Vice President for 2 years and as Secretary for 2 terms. He works as a machinist at Woodward Inc. since Jan 1996
CAPT. MIKE HUFFMAN
Capt. Mike Huffman joined the department in the fall of 2000. He previously served nine years on North Park Fire. He was promoted to Lieutenant on June 8, 2010, and to Acting Captain on Oct. 20, 2014 and Full Captain on February 13, 2015. Mike became an EMT in 1993.
While serving on North Park Fire, Mike received a "Certificate of Honor from the Office of Illinois State Fire Marshal" for his heroism in helping save a young girl from her burning home. Mike is a 4-time Hurst Green Cross participant.
Mike is IL State Certified Fire Officer 2, FFII and FFIII with Hazardous Materials Operations, Instructor I & II, Trench Ops, Technical Rescue Awareness, Ropes Operations, Hazardous Materials Incident Command, Haz-Mat Ops, Emergency Roadway Extrication Technician, Vehicle Machinery Ops, vehicle Machinery Tecnician, and is a Senior Fire Apparatus Operator. Mike has taken numerous classes in: Vehicle Extrication, Big Rig Rescue, New Vehicle Technology, NFPA - Electrical Vehicle Safety for Emergency Responders, Rapid Intervention Team Training , Fire Ground Tactics, Commercial Building Operations, Rescue Company Operations, Truck Company Operations, Smoke Divers and is NIMS compliant.
Mike is currently the HRFD Extrication Team leader. Mike has competed in extrication competitions as the Incident Commander for HRFD throughout the USA. Mike has competed in 18 regional, 5 National, and 4 International Events. Mike is also a adjunct field instructor & Assessor for NAVRA – (North American Vehicle Rescue Association. Mike also in a FDIC Instructor for the last 4 years. Mike is the co founder of Auto X, a mobile training unit / company that travels throughout the Midwest teaching vehicle extrication. Auto X has developed and implemented Crunch Time Vehicle extrication symposium and Bus Bash, School Bus Rescue that is held in Illinois. Auto X and PXT Teamed up and taught Hand to Hand combat - Vehicle Extrication at FDIC 2016 and 2017 and in 2018 taught The Art of Making Space with PXT, 2019, Auto X taught Not you everyday extrication @ FDIC. Auto X has been selected again to teach at FDIC 2020 - Complete Extrication - Routine to Complex which was canceled do to covid 19.
LT. NATE SARVER
Lt. Nate Sarver joined the department in April of 2012. He became an EMT in March of 2014, and a Paramedic in June of 2016. Nate was promoted to Lieutenant on Feb. 4, 2017. Nate moved out of district in Jan.2019 and served 6 months on Memphis Fire in Tennessee before returning to Harlem-Roscoe in Aug. 2019 as a firefighter. Nate was promoted back to a Lt. on Jan. 27, 2020. Nate's brother Ryan also serves as a Lt. on Harlem-Roscoe.
Nate holds state certifications in Basic Firefighter Operations, Technical Rescue and Rope Rescue Operations, HazMat Operations, Vehicle Machinery Operations, along with several more certifications pertaining to firefighting and EMS. Nate has also attended various classes with the topics of fire ground operations, fire attack, safety, along with several medical classes to supplement his Paramedic training.
Nate has an active role in the department's maintenance division as well as being an operator of the department's UAS. Nate has received the 2013 VFW Post 9759, Harlem-Roscoe Fire's Firefighter of the Year Award, the 2013 Harlem-Roscoe Fire's Firefighters' Choice for Good Service Award, as well as the 2012 Harlem-Roscoe Fire's Rookie of the Year award.
LT. RYAN SARVER
Lt Ryan Sarver grew up in the Village of Roscoe, graduating from Harlem High School, after college Ryan joined the department in April 2011.
He was promoted to Lieutenant in March 2017, and then was promoted to EMS Coordinator in June 2017. Ryan became an EMT-B in 2009 and a Paramedic in 2014.
Ryan is Illinois State Certified as a Basic Operations Firefighter, HazMat Technician and IC, Instructor I, and Fire Apparatus Engineer. He has completed several fire related classes through IEMA to be trained in Emergency Management. Ryan is a certified CPR/ACLS/PALS Instructor through the American Heart Association and teaches/coordinates community classes for the fire department.
Ryan is currently employed full-time at Harlem-Roscoe Fire along with a part time job with Swedish American EMS. Ryan and his wife, Brianna, have been married since 2012 and have two children named Callie and Liam.
LT. JORDAN STARK
Lt. Jordan Stark joined Harlem-Roscoe Fire in 2005. He was promoted to Lt. on June 25, 2019. He became a EMT-B in 2007 and Paramedic in 2017.
Jordan is state-certified FF3, Ropes Operation, Trench Operations, and Hazmat Operations. He is NIMs compliant. He was a member of the HRFD Extrication Team from 2007-2010. He has taken many fire classes over his career with the department. He is also a member of the Safety Team.
Jordan lives in Roscoe with his wife, Alison and their two children, Dexter and Miazie.
Jordan will wear the same helmet number, 724, as his late father, Lt. Bob Stark, wore when he served on the department.
LT. SAM MCNAMES
LT. Sam McNames joined the department in 2015. He was promoted to Lt. on July 27, 2020.
Sam started his EMS career in 2013 while attending Rock Valley College. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from IL State University. He received his Paramedic license in 2016 and is also state-certified as Basic Operations Firefighter, Technical Rescue Awareness, FSVO, Hazmat Operations, Rope Rescue Operations, CPR/AED Instructor, and ACLS/PALS/PHTLS.
Sam is involved with the Recruitment and Retention Committee and Safety Committee, is an EMS Preceptor and Rope Division Head. He works for HRFD as a Contract FF/Medic through PSI and is a part-time medic at Blackhawk Farms Raceway
LT. KYLE SWANSON
LT Kyle Swanson joined the department in January of 2018 in a paramedic role and worked his way into a probationary firefighter role. He was sworn onto the department in August of 2018. Kyle was promoted to Lt. on July 27, 2020.
Kyle joined the fire service in 2009 and previously served with Pecatonica Fire Department, and Stillman Valley Fire Department. Kyle also served as a flight paramedic in 2017 with Air-Evac Lifeteam. He has been a paramedic sinc 2013 and is currently a Nationally Registered Paramedic. Kyle is an IL State Certified FFII, Hazardous Materials Operations, Instructor I, Water Operations, and Watercraft Tech, and Fire Service Vehicle Operator. Kyle is also a cleared apparatus/pump operator with HRFD. Kyle has taken numerous classes through IFSI Fire College including Fire Stream Dynamics, SCBA, and Coordinated Fire Attack.
Kyle was appointed the lead of the HRFD RIT team by Battalion Chief Patrick Trollop, to develop team members and new training. Kyle was a member of the 2018 HRFD Crunch Time Extrication team, with the team earning 1st Place Overall in the competition. Kyle is currently working towards finishing his Associates Degree in Fire Sciences. Through the Illinois Fire Chief’s Association: Educational and Research Foundation Scholarship Program, Kyle was awarded a $1000 scholarship from the IFCA Educational/Research Foundation Charity Basketball Scholarship. Kyle married his wife Kayley in September of 2017.
